Na początek krótkiej prezentacji płyty „Emissaries Of The Darkened Call – Three Nails In The Coffin Of Humanity” odezwała się we mnie dusza poety i wymyśliłem na poczekaniu zgadkę. Dla jakiego zespołu sięgnąłem po ten split? Dla mnie odpowiedź jest oczywista, dla kogoś może będzie zaskoczeniem, że to oczywiście VARATHRON. Skoro już wymieniłem tę nazwę, to zacznę od Greków. Trudno coś wymyślić twórczego w sytuacji, gdy obok NIGHTFALL i rzecz jasna NACROMATII jest to mój ulubiony black metalowy band grackiej sceny. W początku lat dziewięćdziesiątych byłem pod ogromnych wpływem muzyki z tego kraju. Mogę śmiało powiedzieć, że preferowałem ich sposób postrzegania diablej muzyki, w przeciwieństwie do dziwnych wówczas dla mnie działań Norwegów. Wstyd, ból i rozpacz, zwłaszcza w dzisiejszej dobie odnawiania kultu MAYHEM i co jeszcze bardziej ciekawe, Vikirnesa. Przepraszam, byłem pozerem i fanem greckiego black metalu, przyznaję się jak na spowiedzi świętej. Z racji tego nie jest obiektywny i mam to u wylotu, szczerze mówiąc. VARATHRON nie jest już tym, czym na „Walpurgisnacht”, to widzę, ale nadal to dla mnie kult i tyle w temacie. Zajebisty jest nawet ten cover utworu BLACK SABBATH, który w oryginalnej wersji wcele mi się nie podoba. Kolejny zespół, jaki nam pogrywa na tym splicie, to rodzimy BLACK ALTAR. Grupa istnieje już kupę lat, sam nie wiem, kiedy to minęło. Świetnie pamiętam, jakby było to wczoraj, pierwsze oficjalne wydawnicto pana prowadzącego ten twór, a tu już diabeł sam nie wie, który to jego wytwór. BLACK ALTAR otwiera całe wydawnictwo. Prezentuje trzy utwory i intro. Nie wiem, czy warto mówić w tym wypadku o jakichś odkrywczych posunięciach. Jest bardzo konkretnie i tematycznie. Black metal i jego wojenne przesłanie zgniata i nie pozostawia wątpliwości, co do rodzaju przekazu. Tu rządzi i rozwala potężny, walcowaty, oparty o stałą ścianę dźwięku black metal, kojarzący się z tuzami szwedzkiej odmiany gatunku. Realizacja i patenty bez zaskoczeń, ale równocześnie bez zarzutów. Całość na najwyższym poziomie. Rodzima scena black metalowa jest potęgą i jest na to masa przykładów, na przykładzie prezentacji BLACK ALTAR nie mamy się czego wstydzić. Obok szacownego greckiego zespołu, ten polski wypada bardzo godnie. Na koniec składanki dostajemy kapelę z USA. Pomysł połączenia w całość tak rozbieżnych odmian diablej muzyki jest karkołomny. Przeskok między BLACK ALTAR, nawalających równo w paszczę, a stonowanym i mistycznym VARATHRON już jest ryzykowny, natomiast zastosowanie na koniec płyty prymitywnego z założenia przekazu THORNSPAWN nie wydaje mi się już w ogóle dobry. Wygląda to tak, że zalecam odsłuchiwanie poszczególnych części składowych krążka oddzielnie. W przypadku potraktowania go jako w jakiś sposób spójnej z założenia całości, skutkować może nie docenieniem składowych. Ja wiem, że jeden lubi ogórki, a drugi ogrodnika córki, jak pisał klasyk, ale sami posłuchjcie, jak wypada „Baphobanner (Flag Of Horror)” zaproponowany zaraz po coverze BLACK SABBATH „Ancient Warrior”. No nie wypada za bardzo, albo nawet wcale. Natomiast odsłuchany oddzielnie i w odpowiednim kontekście jest kawałem rozwalającego mięcha. Pięknie i całkowicie bezkompromisowo zagrany black. Nie ma co udziwniać i szukać romantycznych uniesień, to esencja wojny, jaka ma być zawarta w tym gatunku. Jeśli BLACK ALTAR jest klarownym i miażdżącym przedstawicielem tego, co ja postrzegam jako black kojarzony ze szwedzką sceną, o tyle THORNSPAWN kojarzy mi się z tym, co robią w tym gatunku kapele z Ameryki Południowej, czy Azji. Nie potrafię tego sprecyzować, ale ich przekaz ma w sobie ten jad i siarę niespotykaną z reguły u zespołów ze starego kontynentu. Na koniec powiem jeszcze, że „Emissaries Of The Darkened Call – Three Nails In The Coffin Of Humanity” to bardzo wartościowa płyta. Oczywiście o niespójności i z dupy wziętej kolejności i połączeniu już było, więc to na tyle. Aha, no i nie lubię z założenia splitów, więc obniżam tę nieszczęsną punktację o cały jeden punkt. Prescribing “Three Nails In The Coffin Of Humanity” we have three aged cults awaiting judgement on this triple pronged attack, split CD.
Firstly we are off to Poland for Black Altar [7] the work of the barbaric looking Shadow. This act have been active since 1996 with two full length albums and a couple of other split releases in their armoury. It would appear that they have on the whole been quiet though since last full length ‘Death Fanaticism’ dropped back in 2008. After an unsettling intro of static noise ‘Nighthunter’ gets thorny talons in and rips apart with spiky guitar, deep bass tones and fearsome vocals. There is little in the way of mercy shown here at first, the drumming is incessant and the attack ruthless. With a highly orthodox feel about things the song stalks, as the title suggests, slowing down and injecting a dark melody to proceedings and a sombre depressive atmosphere. There is a bit of an early Satyricon feel about some of the riffing on this one which is no bad thing and as the weighty intensity of ‘I’m Demon’ brings back the relentless fury it is impossible not to be swept off by the head banging tumult. Last black hymn ‘Deep Cut Into The Open Wound Of Mankind’ slices and dices away in a precise whirlwind of sound designed to take your head off. Good stuff, certainly worthy of further exploration.
Greek band Varathron [7.5] are elder statesmen of the scene having been spawned way back in 1988. They should have caught your attention at some point having released a veritable arsenal of material including four studio albums and various compilations. They certainly are the stand out band of these three mainly due to the over theatrical and flamboyant oratory approach of singer and sole founding member Stefan Necroabyssious. “My name is Arawn” he proudly declares with Luciferian intent on the opening number Arawn’s Reich and I am instantly intrigued. Musically things are much more expansive and the arcane sound has a mystical feel about it centred around the melodic twisting and turning guitar riffs. This is certainly a different form of ‘black metal’ than performed by the others and reminds a bit of the likes of Root to me. Rather than dropping down a deep gorge they chuck us in the ‘Black Swamp’ for second offering which rattles off in a much faster fashion with a loud roar chasing the instruments. Slowing down again into the groove that the band seem to favour attention is drawn to the sinuous riff-work and those over the top gurgling vocals that at times make me think of Brian Blessed angry at having been left waiting for a drink at the bar. Proving that they really are quite different last track is no less than a cover of Black Sabbath’s ‘Ancient Warrior.’ It’s quite funny comparing the two versions vocal styles which are both at opposite ends of the scale. I prefer this version.
That leaves USBM horde Thornspawn (3) whose offerings are much shorter than the other bands. Around since 1993 this lot have a big back catalogue but have not crossed my radar before. On the strength of these tracks I am not going to be searching the four albums or the other four splits which they have been concentrating their efforts on since 2007. To put it simply the sound on these numbers is terrible, bass heavy and muddy as arse! Sorry that is a serious description. Singer Blackthorn rasps loud in the mix with a really monotonous range about his style and the primitive musicianship is rough and all over the place. Seriously this sounds like a crap demo band rather than an act who have been active for two decades! I am all for basic sounding primitive black metal with cruddy production but nothing is distinguishable or stands out from these four numbers the daft title of the last one ‘Thorns Of Black Spawned From The Altars Of Norhtarav’ being particularly stupid but at least I guess it adds to their kvltness! They do win the most likes of the three group’s on their Facebook pages so despite coming very much at the bottom as far as this review goes they have at least achieved something over the other two bands who completely wipe the floor with them in style and substance!

Nowy materiał Black Altar podany na płycie w asyście amerykańskiego Thornspawn i kultowego Varathron? Chyba lepiej sobie tego wszystkiego Shadow nie mógł obmyślić. Uderza po blisko czterech latach ciszy i to od razu z czymś takim, brawo! Imponuje już sama forma wydania tej płyty. ęwietny front-cover, klimatyczna wkładka, teksty, info o kapelach`Ś wszystko na swoim miejscu. Czas przejść zatem do muzyki.
Na pierwszy ogień idzie twór Shadowa właśnie. I tutaj już pierwszy siarczysty strzał w pysk! Nie znam może całej twórczości Black Altar na wyrywki, ale te utwory wydają mi się być jeszcze potężniejsze i brutalniejsze niż w przeszłości. Trzy strzały wściekłego black metalu, okraszonego skandynawskimi inspiracjami. Piekielne szybkie blasty, siarczyste riffy, niezbędna ilość melodii i ten zajebisty, lodowaty klimat! Szczerze mówiąc nie spodziewałem się czegoś aż tak dobrego! Jeśli ma to być zapowiedź nadchodzącego pełnego albumu to ja łykam go bez pytania.
Drugim z kolei zespołem jest legenda greckiego black metalu, czyli Varathron. Ta nazwa to klasa sama w sobie, więc słabo być nie mogło. Grecy przygotowali nam na ten split dwa własne utwory i świetnie odegrany, skąpany w ich własnym stylu cover Black Sabbath. Dostajemy więc jak zawsze solidną dawkę black metalu mrocznego, bardzo klimatycznego i naprawdę dobrze zaaranżowanego. Szybkie, agresywne riffy idealnie połączone z wolniejszymi, patetycznymi motywami i do tego te charakterystyczne, niby proste ale od razu wchodzące w głowę melodie. Ĺťeby tak grać naprawdę trzeba coś potrafić, to nie tylko trzy riffy na krzyż plus łupana perkusja`Ś Co ważne, materiał ten jest bardzo dobrze nagrany (podobnie jak w przypadku Black Altar), więc każdy dźwięk, każdy smaczek jest tutaj doskonale słyszalny.
Na koniec dostajemy przedstawicieli amerykańskiej sceny bm, Thornspawn. I tu nieco spokojniejsze, bardziej `zrównoważone` granie się kończy. Od pierwszych sekund Hamburgery chłostają, że aż (nie)miło. Tu nie ma melodyjek ani klimatycznych zwolnień. Ostra, zbasowana ściana dźwięku i do przodu! Pałker momentów na odpoczynek nie ma prawie wcale a wokal pluje jadem na lewo i prawo. Brzmienie już znacznie bardziej surowe, niż w przypadku dwóch poprzednich kapel, ale coś tam jeszcze słychać. Wałki raczej krótkie, ale za to piekielnie intensywne!
Trzy bardzo dobre zespoły, trzy nieco odmienne wizje black metalowej sztuki. Nie będę tu wskazywał najlepszego zespołu bo to przecież nie zawody, ale jestem pewny, że każdy maniak blacku, powinien być zadowolony z obcowania z tym splitem. Naprawdę mocna rzecz!

BLACK ALTAR Polish black metal legends have joined forces with their blackest arts allies Varathron and Thornspawn to created the split "Emissaries of the Darkened Call"! A true piece of unholy blasphemy, as brutal as terrorizing as it could be!
Black Altar been born in a blasphemous Sabbath in the Night of Walpurgia Anno Bastardi 1996 by the hand of the dark lord Shadow, the only remaining founding member, since then the band has been rising with unholy strength to set a mark on Polish black metal scene, yet they have become legends on what they do.
True to the underground metal movement, they've been raising fans all across this black metal universe! This unholy crusade by the Black Altar guardian Shadow has given them due respect on this strict musical genre.
With their own terrorizing black metal sound, Black Altar reached with their latest full length "Death Fanaticist" allot of good reviews and critics, it has been a true highlight on the bands career!
This split release unveals a quite uniform quality black metal release, lead by Black Altar experience and conjured blackest sound, this release has all to please the tortured black metal adepts ears, and yet catching some death metallers attention, this with a twisted and sick unholy sound that shall haunt you for a good pack of time!
For those who don't know the band yet, the Greek Varathron sound and dynamics are closer to the one played by Black Altar, yet with the add of some Hellenic spice and melody here and there, all this without the loss of the brutal sound with some death metal elements into. By the other hand, Thornspawn unleash a true rough and ugly black metal sound, damn old school and dirty, anyhow... how should fucking black metal be? Right? Sick and twisted as Hell \m/
On this split release Black Altar sound reaches another step forwards, the sound is each time deeper, dark, pale and sure to set horror on your wicked frostbitten minds, without a doubt a sound from a cult band doomed to be underated on this underground metal layer, “Emissaries of the Darkened Call” is a piece hidded from the masses but known by the enemies of the hypocritical and hideous christian lambs.
The production is quite fitting on each bands evil intentions, yet Thornspawn may sound too analogue and dirty, yet I am sure the band intended it to be in this way! In the other hand the sound by Black Altar and Varathron is close to other bands you may associate with their sound, bands like Urgehal, Watain, Tjuder, Belphegor, Satyricon, Immortal, DarkThrone, Rotting Christ etc... the split was recorded at BAT studio by Marek Heimburger (Black Altar), Roller Coaster Studio, Patras GR by Haris and AchilleasC (Varathron) and Temple of the Beast studios by Andres Magana and the band (Thornspawn).
The release is quite uniform in quality but I should mention some highlights like "Nighthunter" a classic black metal song , "Deep Cut into the Open Wound of Mankind" a crescent sharpen sacrficial dagger into your blackened hearts, or the brutal blasphemy by the name of "I'm Demon" by Black Altar other good tracks are "Arawn's Reign" and the Black Sabbath cover "Ancient Warrior" by Varathron, songs that may attach easly to your ears once you first listen to them!
In all "Emissaries of the Darkened Call" is a great black metal piece for adepts of deep dark, sinister and unholy black metal, as obscure as it intended to be! This is without a doubt an horror piece of darkest forms to add to your blaspheme quality collection! A release filled up with blackest hymns of destruction and terrorizing atmospheres, you must check it out and be cursed for eternity by the "emissaries of the darkened call"!

The release of a split album with the participation of three legendary bands, of the Greek Varathron, of the Polish Black Altar and of the American Thornspawn, it can only draw the attention of the fans. So this split was released in 2012 and it contains an introduction and three compositions by Black Altar, two of their own tracks and a cover of Ancient Warrior of Black Sabbath by Varathron and four by Thornspawn. The question that will come to someone’s lips is whether it is possible, three quite different bands being able to present their works in an album without that one sounding like an album with no connection between the bands.
The album begins with the compositions of Black Altar who have planned and offered a full mini album. It starts with an atmospheric ambient introduction and it goes on with the music being into the well-known style of Black Altar, that is dark, threatening, heavy and fast Black Metal. The riffs are fast, tremolo riffs with a lot of disharmonic parts and dark, solid outbursts. The structure of the tracks is flawless, with changes, beautiful passages, intense atmosphere and sentiments and vivid images. The instruments are played with accuracy and passion while the vocals are harsh and dirty, somehow more monotonous than those that I would want. The sound result of the part of Black Altar is quite dark, heavy and bass and it absolutely fits to the compositions. The lyrics are written in English and they describe dark stories of murder, demons and the hatred towards human race.
The album continues with Varathron who had disappointed with their previous bad released. However, the material that they present here has a fresh point of view and shows that they walk into paths of renewal. For sure also here they maintain their classic character with the heavy, solid riffs and the heavy dark atmosphere, but here we will also find fast riffs of Scandinavian school, chaotic outbursts, while the element that will draw the listener’s attention is the oriental and folk elements that they have added. The tracks are very interesting, with very good structure and perfect deliverance of the feelings and the atmosphere to the listener. The production is clean, slightly bass while the mixture is quite balanced and it highlights all the instruments to which they have done a really good job. The lyrics are written in English and they speak about demons with that occult character of the lyrics of Necroabyssious.
At the end of the album we come across four tracks of Thornspawn. As always the band is devoted to the old, barbarian sound of the early ’90ies, so here too it continues into that same style. Fast rhythm, barbarian, without any technicality into riffing, full of violence and hate. The band serves this style from its beginning and it does that very well by creating compositions with very good structure, interesting riffs and intense feelings of hate. Here the production puts out a very dirty sound, it has nothing in common with the previous bands, something that shows that the band is born and stuck to the early ’90ies regarding every aspect. The lyrics are written in English and they speak of demons and hate.
So, in order to answer the question asked in the beginning, “Emissaries of the Darkened Call – Three Nails in the Coffin of Humanity” manages to present three works of different style, giving three different aspects of Black Metal without being created any problem. The love, of the old school perception of Black Metal, the long experience and the talent that distinguishes the musicians who participate in the album, unite their works and make them coexist harmoniously within the same album. Apart from that both individually every band has offered interesting material that it worth to listen. Buy with no fear.
